SI2 Newsletter - Update 1, 2, & 3 Steering Team Members - October 2017

PLEASE ENROLL IN SI2 FOR THE 2017-18 SCHOOL YEAR IF YOU'VE NOT YET DONE SO--TIME TO GET STARTED!

Remember that enrollment for SI2 is not automatic. Renewal is very easy--just follow these steps:

  1. Open http://asainstitute.org/si2
  2. Click "Renewal" on the right-hand side of the page
  3. Complete the form in accordance with instructions given. If your school has already renewed, you'll get a message indicating this; if your school has not renewed yet, continue with the form.

Be sure to do this as soon as you can to avoid any interruption in your SI2 services.

SYSTEM ROLL-OVER--YOU'RE NOW FREE TO PROCEED

The VTA Process page rolled over to the new school year on September 18. You now see that you will have an empty status column and new deadline dates. Everything entered by your team has been saved and your School Improvement Plan PDF has been archived. The roll-over is the beginning of your new year with SI2. October is the month to get rolling!

OCTOBER SUBMISSIONS

It's a new school year, and you're ready to start the year with your completed SIP--hooray! Now is the time to:

  1. Make any needed updates to the Steering Team Roster. Be sure to also update your Primary Contact and Point Position assignments if applicable.

  2. Look over the Council Roster and delete people who will no longer serve on your council. Invite new Council members as needed to ensure that your roster meets the criteria in the rubric. Watch the webinar for instructions on how to create or update the Council. Feel free to call Tina for any needed assistance.

  3. Work with the person who manages email at your school to make sure all Steering Team and Council Members can receive email from asai@asainstitute.org. This is the address we use to send Council Discussion invitations.

  4. Make sure all Preparation Activities (including professional development) have been added to the school calendar.

  5. ASAP--If you've not done so already, set the date for your first Council Meeting in your school calendar so it doesn't get overlooked. The minutes of the Meeting are due October 31. We'll talk about this discussion at Thursday's webinar (register).

  6. ASAP--If you've not done so already, set the date for your first Student Body Discussion and determine how this will be conducted. The minutes of the Discussion are due October 31. Watch the Student Body Point Person Instructions video for help.

See the VTA Process sections for October to complete these steps and submit each item for review. Be sure to look over the rubric ahead of time so you know what is expected for each.

HEADS UP!

In November, the Achievement Data Point Person and Root Cause Data Point person will be updating data. The November webinar will go over these tasks, but if s/he feels ready to get a head start, the Achievement Data Point Person may drop in Achievement Data.

Schools in Update 3 are required to survey all students and teachers as well as a representative number of parents and community members this year. Surveys can be taken on any device with a browser and an Internet connection (smart phones are not recommended due to their small screen size). Start making plans for this now - reserve computer labs or other resources as needed.

SETTING UP YOUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN FOR SUCCESS

It is crucial that you use your time wisely and not wait until the last minute to get things done; to do so results in a weakened plan that neither you nor your colleagues will be satisfied with for student achievement and academic growth.

As always, communication is key for implementation of a successful SIP. Make sure all participants know the details of the plan for your building. Check in frequently with those who are responsible for implementing Preparation Activities.

GRANT OPPORTUNITY FOR SCHOOLS INTERESTED IN JOINING SI2

ASAI has emailed all superintendents and principals in the state regarding this year's SI2 grant. If you would like to encourage other buildings in your corporation to join SI2, please feel free to share along with your experiences. Applications are due on October 20. Tina will be happy to answer any questions they have via email or phone.
